Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Marlin Gusman welcomes Mayor LaToya Cantrell as guest speaker for OPSO Young Marines Graduation Ceremony

Officials to honor graduates of program that focuses on character building, leadership and a healthy, drug-free lifestyle

Sheriff Marlin N. Gusman and New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell will officiate at a graduation ceremony for 17 OPSO Young Marines who have completed seven weeks of training in a program that promotes the mental, moral and physical development of young people ages 8 through completion on high school. The graduation ceremony takes place at 10 a.m. Saturday at the OPSO Training Academy, 819 S. Broad St.

The OPSO Young Marines program focuses on character building, leadership, and promotes a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. The Young Marines is the official youth program of the U.S. Marine Corps and the focal point for the Marine Corps' Youth Drug Demand Reduction efforts.

Mayor Cantrell will deliver congratulatory remarks at the graduation ceremony which opens with a close-order drill by the Young Marines and concludes with Sheriff Marlin Gusman issuing the first order to the Young Marines to "unbutton your blouse and blouse your boots," which refers to loosening the first button of your camouflage blouse, and tucking pant legs under a blousing strap that rests on top of military-style boots.
