The Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office this week is hosting a four-day police cyclist training course for 40 bicycle officers from ten law enforcement agencies, including local agencies as well as agencies from Michigan and Texas.

The course, which is sanctioned by the International Police Mountain Bike Association (IPMBA), consists of classroom instruction at the Sheriff's Office, drills at the Smoothie King Center and extended bike rides around the City of New Orleans.

Lead instructor for the IPMBA course is OPSO Deputy Stanley Cosper, Sr. "Cyclist on patrol enhances public safety, without question," Deputy Cosper said. "Bikes allow officers to respond more quickly. They also encourage communication and interaction with the public."

Attending the course are police cyclists from the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office, St. John Parish Sheriff's Office, the New Orleans Police Department, Port of New Orleans Harbor Police Department, the Superdome Public Safety Department, police departments at Southern University at New Orleans, Dillard University and Tulane University; Richland Hills (Texas) Police Department, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Police Department in Battle Creek, Michigan.
