OPSO Contributes to Public Safety During Mardi Gras 2019

NEW ORLEANS - 03-07-2019

‘Booking Bus’ records largest number of bookings at 99

Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin N. Gusman today announced there were 99 total bookings at the Mobile Booking facility known as the "Booking Bus" in the French Quarter this year, up significantly from the 41 individuals booked at the location in 2018.

The 99 total bookings is the largest number of bookings since the Booking Bus was started 14 years ago.

"Having the booking bus in the French Quarter for two-weekends of Mardi Gras played a critical role in keeping New Orleans residents and visitors safe while they enjoyed Mardi Gras festivities," said Sheriff Gusman. "Overall, the vast majority of residents and citizens were able to enjoy the full Mardi Gras experience; however we were prepared for those who had to be removed from the streets because they broke the law," he said.

Sheriff Gusman pointed out that public safety was enhanced by the close cooperation among OPSO officers, New Orleans police officers and state troopers, resulting in the significant increase in bookings.

Charges ranged from the more typical Mardi Gras violations, such as, public drunkenness and disturbing the peace, to more serious violations, including drug arrests and illegal carrying of weapons.

Additionally, the Sheriff's Office provided crowd control and security at Gallier Hall; and the Sheriff's Mounted Division and patrol units provided an escort for many parades.
