Sheriff Gusman promotes safety during Carnival season

NEW ORLEANS - 02-21-2020

This weekend through Mardi Gras Day, the Special Reserve Deputy Unit will volunteer at the Operation Mardi Gras/Lost Kids booth at St. Charles Avenue and Toledano Street, where children and parents can reunite if they become separated during a Mardi Gras parade.

Parents, I have some tips for you to keep your children safe.

  • Tip No. 1: Before you venture out to the parades, take a picture of your child with your cell phone. That way you will have a record of what they are wearing -- whether they are in costume or regular clothing.
  • Tip No. 2: If you become separated from your child, the photo will make it easier for law enforcement and the media to get out images of your child in the unlikely event that you are separated from them.
  • Tip No. 3: To ensure that this does not happen, keep your children close, and don't let them wander off. Be sure that they know to stay behind the parade barricades.
  • Tip No. 4: Listen closely. Do not put chairs and ladders on public property along any parade route until four hours before parade time.
  • Tip No. 5: If your children are in ladders to view the parade, be sure that they are placed as many feet behind the street curb as the ladder is high. If you have a six-foot ladder, make sure it is six feet away from the curb.
  • Tip No. 6: Don't keep your money out for any longer than is necessary. You don't want to make yourself the victim of a professional pickpocket.
  • Tip No. 7: Don't park in front of driveways, fire hydrants, or anywhere you would not normally be allowed to park. And be sure to lock your vehicle!
  • Tip No. 8: The neutral ground is public property, and it is illegal to block off areas for private use.
  • Tip No .9: Glass containers are prohibited along parade routes. Leave glass containers at home.
  • Tip No. 10: Let kids have the best throws.

Have a safe and Happy Mardi Gras!
